Potential benefits, and the trade-offs
IUL can be a strong fit for the right person, but it’s more complex than term life and it isn’t a shortcut to building wealth. Here’s both sides before you go further.
Potential benefits
- Permanent coverage that can last your whole life if the policy stays funded
- Cash value can earn interest linked to an index, with a floor (often 0%) in down years
- Flexible premiums and access to cash value through loans or withdrawals
- Cash value generally grows tax-deferred, and the death benefit is generally income-tax-free
Trade-offs to understand
- Caps and participation rates limit how much of the index’s gain you receive, and carriers can change them
- Policy charges and the cost of insurance are deducted every month, even in years with 0% credited
- Costs more than term life for the same death benefit, and early surrender can mean steep charges
- Loans accrue interest and can cause the policy to lapse if they grow too large, which may trigger taxes
Protection today. Potential for tomorrow.
Coverage for life
A permanent death benefit for your family that doesn’t expire, as long as the policy is funded.
Growth with a floor
Cash value earns interest linked to an index like the S&P 500, with a floor (often 0%) in down years.
Access your cash value
Use policy loans or withdrawals for retirement income, emergencies, or big goals.
One policy, more than one goal.
An IUL works for your family and your future at the same time. People use it for:
- Permanent protection that doesn’t expire
- Building cash value they can access later
- Supplementing retirement income
- Leaving a legacy or estate planning
- Living benefits for qualifying serious illness on many policies
How your cash value actually grows
Cap rate
The most interest you can be credited in a period. If the cap is 10% and the index gains 15%, you’re credited 10%.
Participation rate
The share of the index gain used to figure your interest. At 80% participation, an 8% index gain becomes 6.4%, before any cap.
Floor
The least you can be credited, often 0%. It protects you from index losses, but it doesn’t stop monthly charges from coming out.
Policy charges
The cost of insurance, administrative fees, and rider costs. They usually rise as you age and can reduce your cash value.
Policy loans
You can borrow against your cash value. Loans charge interest and reduce the death benefit, and a large unpaid loan can cause the policy to lapse.
Surrender charges
If you cancel in the early years, often the first 10–15, the carrier may keep a portion of your cash value.
How a year might be credited
Assume a 10% cap, 100% participation, and a 0% floor. These numbers are made up to show the mechanics, not a prediction.
| Index change for the year | Interest credited | What happens to cash value |
|---|---|---|
| +15% | 10% (limited by the cap) | Grows by the credited interest, minus policy charges |
| +6% | 6% | Grows by the credited interest, minus policy charges |
| −12% | 0% (protected by the floor) | No index loss, but policy charges still reduce it |
An illustration is not a promise.
When you look at an IUL, you’ll see an illustration: a projection of how the policy might perform. It’s built on assumed interest rates, current caps, and current charges, and real results will be different. I’ll always show you the guaranteed column next to the illustrated one.
- Illustrated values assume a steady rate of return and today’s caps and charges, none of which are guaranteed
- Guaranteed values show what happens with the minimum credited rate and maximum charges, and can be much lower
- Ask to see how the policy holds up at a lower assumed rate, too
- An IUL may not fit if you need the lowest-cost coverage, can’t fund it consistently, or have a short time horizon

Can I lose money in an IUL?
Index losses aren’t credited to your cash value because of the floor, but policy charges are still deducted. If credited interest is low for several years, those charges can reduce your cash value.
How is IUL different from whole life?
Whole life offers fixed, guaranteed growth and fixed premiums. IUL offers more flexibility and growth potential linked to an index, with fewer guarantees.
How do I access my cash value?
Usually through policy loans or partial withdrawals. Structured properly, loans are generally not taxed as income, but they accrue interest and reduce the death benefit if not repaid.
Is IUL right for everyone?
No. It works best for people who want permanent coverage, can fund the policy consistently, and have a long time horizon. For some families, term life is the better fit.
